By Car (from Melbourne)

Yarragon is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes east of Melbourne by car.

• Take the M1 / Princes Freeway towards Gippsland
• Continue past Warragul and take the Yarragon exit
• Follow signs into town and turn onto Campbell Street
• The Public Hall is clearly signposted and easy to spot

Free street parking is available nearby, with additional parking around the town centre.

By Train

Yarragon is serviced by the V/Line Gippsland Line.

• Trains run regularly from Southern Cross Station
• Get off at Yarragon Station
• From the station, it’s an easy 5–7 minute walk to the Public Hall

Exit the station, head toward the town centre, and follow Campbell Street.

By Coach / Regional Transport

V/Line coaches also service the Gippsland region, connecting through nearby towns. Check current timetables and routes via V/Line if travelling from regional Victoria.

This was the second runway event for the MFW back in October. Giving the public the opportunity to experience a unique way to see Australian fashion designers with a 3 course meal and a fashion runway to feast the eyes.

Street 

Before the show, I had the opportunity to quickly duck out and get some shots outside. I was assigned beforehand to grab photos of the layout, restaurant design and table setups. However with a few minutes to spare, I grabbed a few photos. 

Inside 

This year’s opulent tastes runway was held at a different venue from the year before. il Mercato Centrale located just off Collins Street In Melbourne. Around the corner from Southern Cross Station.

The venue is actually setup as a boutique hub (with Italian roots) for artisan kitchens. Everything from gourmet burgers, Italian, wineries and even ice cream! 23 to pick from to be exact. 

But for the runway night they approached it with a more balanced view. Guests were served up a combination of dishes, desserts, wine and cocktails.

The runway stylist and creative director was Gideon D. Wilonja 

Runway 

Nine designers were shown on the night including Clea, Ngali, Clair Helen, Perple, Lovaan, Godwin Charli, Atoir, Saint Stella M and one of my favourite Australian designers, Gary Bigeni. 

Putting a runway in a restaurant is going to take some creativity. Giving everyone a clear view of the designs but also allowing everyone to enjoy there meal ended up making the runway walk quite long, but expected in such a large space. 

But in terms of designs and mood, every designer brought there own style and aesthetic to the night and music suited the looks nicely.

Now thankfully I was able to use flash for this runway event as the restaurant lighting for the night was the only lighting available. I will also apologise for some of the looks being missing from the photo set. I started the runway stationed behind the bar before moving into a better position. 

Thank you for taking the time to read my article. This one is a little shorter than usual but I aim to get more of these out quickly before runway season starts up again in a few weeks!

Mainly because I haven’t be able to decide, 1. How I want to present my work at MFW and 2. Do I separate this article into multiple instalments or just one big juicy story to sink your teeth into? 

Well, I eventually chose to take smaller bites. 

Today and throughout the next few weeks, I’m going to dive into my time working for Melbourne Fashion Week this year and the images, people and fashion captured during that time. 

Now to get the formalities out of the way, I was contacted by the lovely people at Long Story Short a few months before MFW in helping them cover aspects of the runways and event. 

Ill be forever grateful for the opportunity as it gave me access to the world that lives behind the catwalk and the efforts from everyone involved to make it the spectacle it is. 

It’s easy to look at a beautiful runway and see its awe-inspiring design and appearance but it’s another thing to see how one such runway is pulled off. 

It involves many many hours of effort and not much in the terms of sleep. But at the end of the day, 99% of the people that make these events happen wouldn’t want it any other way. There really is nothing like Fashion Week

Melbourne Shows The World 

We are very lucky to have a few fashion events happen in Melbourne. For our relatively small size (population wise) we have quite a strong fashion scene in Melbourne and MFW is the spokesperson for that. 

The event that’s on its 31st year brings together a broad array of designers and runways scattered across Melbourne’s city. 

7 days of fashion events, talks and seminars all centred around the design, industry and personal style. While I only covered the main runways and one independent runway, over the week. There were still plenty of other activities happening giving more than enough to keep a fashion lover busy. 

It’s also a great opportunity for local artists, designers and stylists to showcase there skills and creativity to a wider audience. One showcase here, could lead to bigger things in the future. 

Opening Night: ganbu marra runway

Melbourne fashion week celebrated the opening of the event with a showcase highlighting insidious fashion and designers working in Australia, pushing the boundaries of local design and textiles as well as giving a platform for artists who may reside in more remote parts of our country. 

How was the night you ask? It was a real vibe, everything from the venue where the runway was held at (Hotel Melbourne) to the food, drinks and attendees. Everything was feeling electric and exciting and there were plenty of well dressed patrons of fashion flaunting there style

Venue

The venue was the newly built Seafarers Melbourne apartment building that serves as a restaurant, hotel and event hub next to the old Mission to Seafarers Building along docklands highway. 

The runway was huge and plenty of really good lighting. I will say apart from the closing runway which was on the Sunday. It had one of the best lighting setups I’ve seen. Very similar to Gary Bigeni’s runway in Sydney. Rows of guests with lighting pointed towards runway centre. 

Designers and Showcase

This really was a fitting start to the week, the designs and theme of the runway was just amazing, we had natural fibres, beautiful colour print fabrics and country inspired designs that would give wrangler a run for there money. 

Kaninda 

The first onto the grey carpet was designer Kaninda. A clothing and swimwear label out of the Pilbara region in Western Australia. 

Airy light fabrics and casual wear for the heat of the northwest of Australia. But not just up here but anywhere you want really. 

Kaninda (mum and daughter team) showed a great array of colourful summer wear that will keep you cool and looking cool at the same time 

Yanggurdi

Second is an ethical fashion label by artist Cassie Leatham. A multidisciplinary artist working with natural fibres to represent her culture and storytelling through fashion 

Jaru Girl

Western Australian designer gives a look into her latest collection from the Milky Water collaboration. Western vibes are very prominent with the styling and also the looks of the garments. One of my favourites from the night 

KingKing Creative 

Sisters Tarisse and Sarrita King, contemporary aboriginal artists showcase there latest summer designs 

Gammin Threads

The creation and passion of Tahnee Edwards. Gammin Threads gives the good vibes and the bright colours to go along with it. 

Goompi’s Girl

Cairns artist and fashion designer Nicole Chatfield aka Goompi’s Girl. Shows us her Kanyarra

Collection of beautiful mixed media denim dresses and skirts, all pieces being upcycled. These were styled beautifully and gave us amazing tones of blue for the runway 

Yarrenyty Arltere Artists

Art group from the centre of Alice Springs. Originally formed as an art project for the community in 2000 now holds many locally based artists in its gallery including a textile division. Two local artists, Louise and Rhonda are the designers which was shown on the night. 

Banbu

This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure to photograph Brooke McGlone designs, the founder of Banbu. It was back at MFF25 that we saw the Back In Blak runway 

Laundry Gallery

Located in Darwin as an art hub for local indigenous artists, Laundry Gallery is a multi purpose exhibition space for artists of all mediums to display there work. All works garments on the night were printed in house at the Gallery by Bridget Bunduck, Titled “Ku Tek” (Black Cockatoo) 

Yapa Mali 

This is also another great designer that I got to photograph back earlier in the year at MFF. 

Yapa Mali is a label founded in 2022 by Maddy Hope-Hodgetts. 

Most of this “Bunggan” collection is printed on Flax Fibre Linen, which is not only long wearing but also plant based and bio degradable for more of a sustainable approach to everyday wear. 

Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara art

Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara gives support to their artists through the community run and operated centres in both SA and Western Australia for multiple projects and genres.

The Pirriya Collection shown here came down from its home in Darwin to be displayed on the runway. It’s a collection of painted silk shawls and dresses done by artist Faith Butler. (From the best of my research, that’s who I think did these wonderful pieces) 

Faith is not just a silk painter but also a master basket weaver and wood carver “purnu”

The event was curated by Melbourne fashion designer Aron Katona, Aron has put on multiple runways over the last few years with this being his second held at the aquarium. It featured couture designs from Aron’s label as well as other emerging designers both from Melbourne and country Victoria.

Other designers featured on the night where. Sépideh Couture, Chameleon Art Werx, Natalie, Hamblin Couture, XO by Kali, Tatyana Design, Art in Situ, A Romantic Soul, Vanshika Bhatnagar and Suzy Syme Art Couture. 

Once I arrived, I immediately walked into the Aquarium to see if I could find either backstage or the runway, which to my surprise was a very hard thing to find. Even one of the models who got caught up in MUAH didn’t know where the runway was. It was only after going through a few floors at sea life did I find the runway area. But most importantly backstage! 

Backstage

Now I knew going into this event that flash was a no-no for the lovely animals and sea creatures that call the aquarium home, so I made sure to pack a RGB panel into my pocket to get a few shots and I have to say I’m glad I did as most of the shots backstage ended up being my favourites from the night. 

My main objective photographing this event was to showcase the local designers but also the amazing men and women that gave up there time and effort to be apart of the runway. All too often the magnitude of a runway show, subtracts the human elements from the show. Designs are looked at as a lineup and models seem like players of a football field. Passing through so quickly you very rarely have time to really take it all in. 

That’s one of the reasons why I like very intimate runways, it gives the viewers a more up close and personal view of the designers and the people that are wearing them, I have to give it to Aron and the team, I don’t think anyone didn’t get a good view at the show. 

This is also why as a fashion photographer, I enjoy back stage so much, Its a chance for me to get up close and personal with what’s being worn and highlight it in my own style. Don’t get me wrong though, I still love big runways! 

Some of the shots you see here are pieces from Melbourne designer Sépideh Couture. Sepideh Rahimi started her fashion label a number of years ago now and likes to incorporate more of sculptural aspect to her designs, I don’t think there was one of her pieces that fitted the normal shape a particular article of clothing should be. As you can see from the photos, majority of them where beautiful. This was her first runway event and I do hope we get to see more of Sépideh’s work in the years to come 

Also another great designer with great style was Vanshika Bhatnagar. Vanshika had a great assortment of styles and designs. One of the recurring patterns I see with what I do is a label sorting a runway lineup to cater to anyone who may be in the audience, This is good in some aspect as it shows the skills of the dressmaker as well as the creativity of such designer. Vanshika has some stunning pieces on the night and it was a joy to photograph them.

Another beautiful piece was work by Natalie Hamblin Couture, Worn by Margie Pty. I unfortunately didn’t get more photos of her work back stage as a majority of it was being presented mid show so very few models had any of her pieces on. 

The Runway

First off, really liked how the runway snaked around in one large circle to accommodate the crowd. There would have to have been 300 or more seats and I would not be surprised if I got that figure completely wrong. The show was hosted by signer and performer Issi, who also closed the runway with her performance. 

Now moving onto the runway shot. Two florescent lights where setup at the end of the runway with a hair light in the background, It would have been the understatement of the century to say the venue was a little dark, Prime lenses stayed on my camera all night and for runways that I’ve attended it was a little surprising. 

In all fairness the ceiling height really dent cater to larger lights or booms and with the aquarium being a home to live animals they did the best they could with the limitations. An improvement in lighting next year should definitely benefit the event.

Now, usually in my previous posts I’ll go through each label showcasing each individual work, but this time I’m going to take a different approach. And if its popular I’ll most likely take this format into some aspects of my Melbourne Fashion Week coverage coming up in a week. 

I’m going to separate all of the designs into categories, stating which designer has done which piece. This gives you get a rough idea of the styles that were at the event. 

Most of the couture items show on the night were not part of a singular collection and didn’t follow one particular theme all the way through, as you see In other collections. So from a practical standpoint it makes more sense of me to show you the design in this format.

This show was on everyone’s lips. Leading up the final day of the fashion week, it had already began building up a stir. Not only was it the talk of attendees but also photographers, with both Canon and Fujifilm attending the closing event. 

Closing Event of AFW 2025

Romance was born has historically always done well with fashion runways and this show was no exception.

Earlier on in the year I had a chance to see there collection at the opening night at the MFF in Melbourne.

Consisting of a total of 8 designers, opening up a full week of couture and style from local and interstate designers.

This showcase however at AFW was different. This was a set design that looked and felt very special. Chantel Covey-Lane who was the creative show director for last years AFW romance show, was back again this year with a completely new theme!

From what I can gather, the set design must have taken hours to implement, with the room being locked off for most of the day. Remaining events and runways were held in the other rooms of carriageworks before the finale of romance later on in the evening.

The set design was certainly whimsical. It had everything from flora, snow and even a few large trees which were sustainably sorted, doted throughout the set. The main walkway started from the back of the event space and looped around to the media pit and back.

Models would make their way to the front, stopping at junction points in between for the audience to have a look at the designs. All while syncing with very dream like / fairytale music 

This years runway by Romance Was Born was definitely a more intimate atmosphere then last years runway. It took a more connected approach, engaging with the audience at a more humanistic level while also being almost fairytale like. The reception after the show from patrons was of astonishment and excitement, Everyone was blown away by its beauty.

Opening Act

The show opened with the amazing talent of Siobhan Lynch who began her amazing dance routine surrounded by dark moodiness.

The best way I can describe the first few minutes is to think of it like an old fantasy movie or cartoon. Where a light source will suddenly emerge onto the main character at the beginning of a story, drawing in the attention of the audience but in the most captivating way possible.

Her grace and poise throughout the showing was a beautiful artistic touch and added to the atmosphere of the night. Some of my favourite photos were from the opening act!

The Collection 

Now there where multiple designs in this collection all with the common theme of being connected with nature. Floral patterns, butterfly gowns, shawls, headpieces and wedding dresses. The scope of designs shown and the consistency of the theme throughout each piece really puts into perspective the effort undertaken by founders Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales.

An astonishing 38 pieces were shown on the night! Mainly consisting of formal evening wear, thick fabrics, lace, jewels and generous amount of colour to wrap it all together. 

However colour can only be appreciated if displayed with contrast. Bold colours were often paired with deep blacks and dark colours. To give the couture clothing a depth in its design and bring people in closer to see in the intricacies of the design.

Like good art. If you continue to see details the longer you look at it, the better the artwork will be received and appreciated.

Some of the pieces shown were also the recent collaboration with Laura Jones. A painter based in Sydney. The floral designs (specifically the pink flora on a shiny black background) were done by Laura. She has been a prominent figure in the Australian art scene for a while and won the Archibald Prize in 2024. You will see her work incorporated in the styling of the pieces below.

I have to say that this really one was of the most inspiring runways I’ve attended this year, to explain to you how it felt to see all this unfolding in front of your eyes would need to be condensed to a large book. Which would be a hard feat within itself.

Good design comes through with effort and hard work. From the planning, to the fabric used, print techniques, decisions on trimmings and cut is really what makes or breaks good design.

We see a lot with modern fashion, a tendency to design and sell relatively inexpensive garments that. (1 Have a simple selection of mass produced fabrics to achieve a streamlined production. (2 Prefer a minimal look to fit in with other current trends and the broader fashion market as a whole.

So to see such a colourful and intricate show with great efforts gone into the garments and the environment there displayed in. Plus a collaborative approach to other artists who work in and outside of fashion. Was a real joy to see and experience, I have to give credit to the whole creative team involved at this show.

A very nice touch midway through was the incorporation of falling snow! I’ll admit I was wondering if this was going to happen before the show and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

(small thank you) I also have to give a small shoutout to Canon Australia, They looked after me with camera equipment for this event and both Mark and Colin who work in the maintenance and service department where great to deal with.

Closing

So what is good fashion? Well, it’s good art.

Art is what drives all creative aspects of this world, from one corner to the other, art stands up against time and space and in most aspects, goes further in time than its creators.

Romance Was Born’s recent show really is a love letter to art. It incorporated so many aspects of the creative industry and brought together such a large team, both in its creatives and models. That in my mind, its going to be a show that will be talked about and revisited for many years to come

Hence one of the reasons I really wanted to write about my experiences at the show, not just to jot down my thoughts but also have a record of one of Australia’s best designers at this current time.

So I begin with the opening act.

Now when I say opening act, I by no means the opening act of the AFW25. As a Melbourne based fashion photographer/blogger and juggling full time work amongst fashion weeks. I was only able to attend the last two days of the event. 

However! Two days are certainly better then none and boy did it end up being an amazing two days. 

Event & Backstage

So this leads me to the first runway of the Thursday morning: Hansen & Gretel Australian Fashion Week Sydney 2025. 

Fortunately for me, I had the opportunity to cover the backstage MAU before the runway. It was a very brief 15 minutes but a amazing opportunity to see the workings behind what make a runway show so memorable to the audiences that attend. 

Who is Hansen & Gretel?

Hansen and Gretel has been a label working out of Sydney since 2012, but it didn’t start there. The designer, Ainsley Hansen. Had began her designing journey after 2009 when she exhibited her first graduate collection at the 2009 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week held in Bryant Park, New York.

Subsequently. Due to her graduate debut success, She quickly began working alongside designers such as Gary Bigeni and Josh Goot. Then in 2012, Ainsley started up her own label and debuted her first show at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

The Runway

Looking at Hansen’s designs, Im struck by its minimal, clean and colour palette designs. There wasn’t a outfit shown in this collection that was completely devoid of some sort of colour.

Every dress, skirt or shirt had a least one shade of colour it was working with. Giving the collection a lovely optimistic vibe that would complement whoever decided to wear it. 

We also had a fantastic array of models for this runway. You’ll hear me say this a lot, but we really are lucky to have such amazing talent that work behind the scenes and on the runway for these events. Without these people, events like these would be none existent. 

Blues, greens and purples where definitely a theme with this latest collection from Hansen and Gretel. Scrolling through the photos in quick succession really highlights that fact. I wonder if this is a decision made by Ainsley to give a more vibrant look to the new collection with its bold choice of mainly single bright colours. Is it showing a more optimistic look for the future and are colour trends moving away from pastels? We will only know looking back.

Moving on, I’d like to address my favourite outfit from the show. This beautiful boho inspired, co-ord set consisting of a smocked skirt and loose v neck blouse with neckband really was beautiful to capture. 

The red base colour underlying the violet floral pattern was a amazing combination, the whole choice of colour and style allowed me to capture some great shots! 

Credit to the model (who for the life of me I have not been able to track down to credit), She worn the set perfectly and gave it the grace and poise needed for a piece like this to truly stand on its own. it was giving relaxed weekend vibes, complementing the design perfectly, Amazing styling team on this one for sure.

White shirts where “in” for the male category, giving summer beach vibes with shorts and thongs

We then for the finale have the evening dresses to finish off the show. The brown dress worn by Montanna Cox was a contrasting outfit from the rest of the collection but had a lovely flowing nature to it. It complemented the models completion which was a great decision by the styling team. 

Closing

In finishing. The runway in my opinion was a great success and congratulation to Ainsley and her team for putting together a very sleek, clean runway experience. Top marks for the music vibes too. 

Having the opportunity to not only see the behind the scenes but also cover the runway was definitely a highlight. Photography wise, the runway choreographer did a good job leading the models down the centre first and subsequently through each side aisle after that. 

Hansen’s designs are becoming a staple in Australian fashion weeks and she has building from strength to strength, from her opening show in 2009, to participating in a new era of the Australian Fashion Week in Sydney. I look forward to seeing what she may have in store for us at the next one.

Recently I had the great opportunity to fly to Sydney and attend the last two days of the Australian Fashion Week 2025.

Coming into this event was very different from what I’m normally used to, Being my first time traveling interstate for a fashion event. I had to plan out the two days of photography with the proviso in mind that I will be away from my gear. Plus carry the gear to and from the hotel, keeping only the bare essentials in my bag.

So landing into Sydney airport with my camera bag at max weight “carry on” capacity, I began to make my way to Redfern station with a short walk to Carriageworks. After grabbing my media accreditation and finding out where this “media room” was. I was very happy to find media lockers on site, which made the experience during all the runway shows that much better. 

To add on top of that, Canon Australia was kind enough to lend me a flagship Canon R1 and a RF 100-300mm f2.8 lens for the final runway show on Thursday. Which brings me to the designer of that show: Mariam Seddiq 

Tailored Sophistication 

Mariam Seddiq has been designing Australian styles for 10 years starting her label back in 2015, Paddington Sydney. This decade show, is to represent a celebration of 10 years of custom and Demi-couture designs that has made her a known name in the Australian and international fashion industry. 

Showcasing her new work and full collection on the Thursday night at the Australian Fashion Week. Fresh from her recent highly acclaimed “Icons” show at the New York Fashion week, back in February of this year.

Silhouette is a big word in fashion. It incorporates and emphasises one of the most important aspects of a design. The ability to create a specific shape or form, whether it’s a curve, straight line or edge. Design and silhouette go hand in hand in hand. No more was that more apparent than with Mariam’s collection.

Carrying on, the designs worn where stunning! Thoughtfully curated, each piece showcased impeccable colours, exceptional fabrics, and meticulous tailoring throughout the evening, that married perfectly with the beautiful large space used for the runway.

I have to give it to the Australian fashion council for putting together such a great event space last minute for the designers to show their collections. 

The runway was held in the Carla Zampatti Showroom at Carriageworks, which was one of the larger spaces available to the designers.

The showroom really helped bring out the best for the Australian industry, with a large full width floor to ceiling led panel to display a live feed of the show as well as custom imagery.

Designs 

Now lets begin talking about the designs from the night! First Dress onto the runway was worn by Model: Lim Lee 

(Full list of models are mentioned at the end of this article in order of appearance) Readers View will give you a full width experience if you want to get a better look at the designs.

The start of the show exuded a moody, distinctive, and edgy ambiance. Black served as the overarching theme for the initial thirteen designs, encompassing a diverse range of styles. Everything from shiny two-piece street wear to sleek nightlife attire. 

Looking through the photos you will see that a lot of the styles are ready to wear designs, that would suit pretty much any occasion, possessing versatility and suitability for various occasions.

Just in the first few designs you will see how broad Mariam’s fashion genre can reach and its ability to appeal to a wide audience through the singular colour of black.

Next was the beautiful burgundy, blue and silver/champagne hues, gracing the runway

Model: Frankie Scot

Now as a fashion photographer, Colour plays a big role in the work I do, but also in the enjoyment of it as well. You learn about composition through the study of monochrome but begin your storytelling journey and craft though the study of colour. 

Colour plays a huge role. 

Even standing in the media pit, 20-30 photographers squeezed shoulder to shoulder with each other, nothing more then my feet and a monopod to establish my small position in the pit. The sound of a thousand shutter clicks going off when the models posed in front of our cameras. 

Nothing was more apparent to me than the beautiful colours I was capturing in the frame.

The final 2/3rds of the show was really when the crowd started looking in awe. Phones were out and videos were rolling. The spectacle of Mariam Seddiq’s Bridal and Evening wear really took the show to its amazing closing.

This is where I give some credit to the amazing models that walked on the night. Riahn Griffiths, had a beautiful oversized blazer and trousers combo. 

Stas Jepsen with a her exquisite, silky, and shimmering overcoat captivated the cameras as she gracefully posed before the media pit.

I really loved the way the outfit draped onto the floor and while it looked light and elegant, it still had a thick luxurious look to it flowing effortlessly to the floor

Montana Cox who I’ve photographed before at the NGV Gala had a beautiful silver evening dress, Taking the breath away from the audience and closing an amazing showcase of style and design. 

Closing thoughts 

Now I can only speak for myself here. But in my humble opinion, There is nothing more human than creation. Whatever your creation may be, physical or emotional. Creation is one of the fundamental human experiences that not only creates a more interesting world. Its a thing that can be admired from pretty much anyone who will stop and take the time to look.

Mariam Seddiq’s designs made me stop. Even mid event when the runway was still pumping, It made me stop for those very few brief seconds and think….Im so lucky to experience this. THAT is the power of fashion and the power of good, thoughtful design.

Before we start, I must acknowledge the amazing carpet and lighting design that graced this runway event. The vibrant colours and boldness of the design elevated the show to a remarkable level, setting it apart from others.

Colour and design are integral to First Nations culture, and this was evident at the Melbourne Fashion Festival. I was fortunate enough to attend and witness this firsthand. The diverse range of styles showcased and the inclusivity of the event made it a truly remarkable experience.

The runway started off with a vocal performance from Jada Weazel kicking off the beginning of the show. Different from most performances in the past, Jada entered the runway from the media pit side, adding to the atmosphere as she slowly made her way to the middle rows of the runway.

The lighting was a mixture of beautiful red tones and hues, with an amazing performance from Jada Weasel. Im a little disappointed I didn’t capture a video to give the full representation. But there is always next time!

Corin Corcoran

First onto the runway was designer:

Corin Corcoran 

With a collection of works incorporating leather textiles, fabrics and metals. Corin’s designs where a modern take on more traditional techniques of cloth making, with large hand stitched seems, open tears, excess fabric and unique patterns, different from the neatly stitched and clean looks from other designers.

With the feathers being quite a nice contrast with the white ripped pants. Giving almost a futuristic nomadic vibe.

Corin specifically uses recycled and scrap materials in all her design showcased on the night, every piece of fabric and textile shown has either been up-cycled or recycled showcasing the sustainability of her designs. 

Take Pride Movement

Next on the purple carpet was:

Take Pride Movement

A label created by Benjamin Thomson. The showcase had a upfront, loud and bold presence with the designs and colour choice. This runway show speaks not only for the person behind the designs but also the message his trying to send. To be proud of who you are and let nothing stand in your way

I quite liked the styling and the collection as a whole. The throwback vibes of turn of the century fashion mixed with new and unique first nation design, gave it a fresh street style look. 

Yapa Mali

Yapa Mali was the third designer to exhibit at the MFF runway.

Greens, browns and yellows were the colour themes on the night, mixing traditional Ngiyampaa patterns on fabrics and giving them a casual look. Something for everyday wearing.

This collection included a lot of light fabrics and airy designs, more so for warmer climates or for the spring or summer seasons. All designs are made with 100% linen giving them a soft but durable shimmer. I quite liked the look of male shirts and they would make a great look for evening outdoor events. 

Miimi & Jiinda

Model: Portia Jade Talib lead the start of the showcase in a very summery girl dress. The actual design of the skirt was nice, I liked the use of the uneven cut at the bottom which made the front a little shorter than the back. Plus a ruffle at the bottom of a dress is always a good idea to add movement, which is also a lot better to photograph. 

The daughter and mom designer duo certainly had some great looks for the showing. Melissa being the fashion designer with her mom Lauren designing the hand woven aspects of the outfits. 

As a whole the collection had pretty much every aspect of fashion design, from swimwear, evening wear and a beautiful puffy sleeve dress, which was the final outfit of the collection, the long train at the back made the outfit my favourite from the label. 

Gali Swimwear 

Now not to be critical, In fact to be absolutely honest. There is not a great deal to talk about with this collection due to the fact that the amount of fabric used for this collection would’ve amounted to one dress from a previous designer :).

I thought the patterns were nice, they are at the end of the day colourful male swim briefs. Well done to the models for keeping themselves looking very sharp. The ladies of the audience quite enjoyed the event! 

Banbu 

Now as I said in my last post, this years fashion festival included me capturing some videos. Banbu’s colourful and vibrant collection included loosely hanging fabrics for evening dresses, ruffled bottoms and tops, all in a very two tone and shinny presentation, lets not forget the unique doily styled dress at the opening of the showcase too.

showed his latest collection the mixture of pop culture and street art with his bold use of colours and print. 

From a fashion standpoint, you’d be hard-pressed to miss one of these outfits on the street and they definitely make an impression.

One of the outfits included a artistic drawn fire design like something you would see from an old school 50s hot rod. If you look closely enough you will see cockatoos and barbwire included too.

Delvene Cockatoo-Collins

Giving a very moody vibe for the second last designer at the Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Back in Blak Premium Runway Event.

One of the unique things about this collection was the use of Duster like jackets. The one worn by Model: Ben Hebbard, a black-and-white bird print outfit looked great, the contrast between the black coat and the cream one piece romper suit look awesome. Now I’m no Bird expert but from what I can see it’s either a Darter or a Black necked Stork. Correct me if im wrong! 

Another unique item was a one off black tutu dress, combined with a brown gold printed top and fibrous natural earrings

Lychee Alkira 

Last but certainly not least we have NSW designer Renee Henderson with her label Lychee Alkira.

A recent graduate, Renee showcased her latest collection ‘Pathways’ with bright colours and prints. All her work is natural fibres and dye, with her prints being environmentally conscious in its process.

The first piece featured a vibrant red and white floral print party dress, subsequently transitioning to a bathing suit adorned with an oversized pocket vest, both looking to be crafted from the same material.

Bathing suits seemed to have had a theme at this runway event with more than three designers showing there latest swimwear designs.

One of the pieces I found I liked the most from the collection, was a grey and white skirt worn by Model: Ina Anackov.

The pattern and print work of the skirt was beautiful and you could see it suiting a lot of different styles, from formal gatherings to street style

Good vibes were definitely the theme for this runway finishing her collection off with another party dress. 

To Wrap Things Up:

Without a doubt, Melbourne fashion festivals Back In Blak premium runway was an absolute blast to photograph, the crowds enjoyed it. The musical performance was exceptional, and the atmosphere was electric as the event commenced. Having missed last year’s event, I approached the runway with an open mind, eager to witness the offerings. I must express a round of applause for the designers, as I was thoroughly impressed. This year’s event undoubtedly helps create Back In Blak to become a highly anticipated fixture in the Melbourne fashion festival calendar.

Few fashion events in Melbourne come to the scale of Melbourne Fashion Festival. Although the year boasts several prestigious events, it somewhat lacks the remarkable diversity and size of the Melbourne Fashion Festival.

This year in particular had 15 consecutive days of fashion events ranging from student showcases to talks and meeting on the fashion industry of Australia. But today we are going to be discussing the first day of the Premium Runways held at the grandest of venues,The Royal Exhibition Building. 

These runways generally hallmark the final week of the festival and will usually create the largest buzz, Building the hype and excitement throughout the final 6 days, towards the closing of the festival on the Saturday. 

Being the opening event, the vibe in the main hall of the exhibition building was electric, it really felt like the whole city had turned out for the show. Myself, standing in the photographers pit, I had the unique opportunity and perspective to soak in the whole atmosphere. Nothing compares to the adrenaline rush you get pre-runway, its a feeling like no other and one of the reasons why I will always enjoy covering these events! 

GAIL SORRONDA

We started the night with the first designer Gail Sorronda kickstarting the runway. With Signer (Sarah Blasko) performing with the opening collection.

The collection featured pieces such as the Night Garden Cap and fairy bird dress.

A conservative, bold and dynamic collection of outfits that complimented the opening of the event. By this stage you could feel the energy in both the runway models and the onlookers with the first designer pieces gracing the timber floors of the catwalk.

BIANA SPENDERS

Next, was Bianca Spenders Autumn 25 collection. With whites and blues as the colours of choice for the runway, in harmony with the designs shown.

I will admit the muted green tones from the wool collection were very nice and a nod to a more classic era of design and materials. The wool also caught the light in a different way compared to anything else on the night, something about the thickness of the material and the slight sheen you get from it gave it a beautiful look under the runway light.  

NGALI AUSTRALIA

The third designer was a bright and stylish collection by Ngali Australia.

This show was a particular favourite of mine on the night. The use of colours and lighting just married perfectly for some great images. The vintage tones and colour palette made for some striking looks too.

I liked the use of browns, greens, yellows and blues, all tying in together. I do think its great for a designer to embrace bold colours. It’s designs like this that make for a brighter and more colourful, unique world.  

AJE.

Fourth onto the runway was Aje. A Melbourne-based label known for its edgy and diverse styling.

The collection showcased a remarkable variety of styles. Everything from fitted one piece dresses to denim. There was even a large floral pattern designed dress! Definitely one of the more broader based showings on the night. Which in a lot of cases is a good thing, especially for attracting people who may not be familiar with your label or designs. 

MACGRAW

The Macgraw sisters (Macgraw) with there prep school 2024 collection was next on the wood paneling.

The sleek and stylish designs where quite striking, something that would catch peoples attention if worn in a street style manner. Macgraw’s collection featured an array of shiny, in-house-produced fabrics, adding a sleek and eye-catching element to the designs. The label has been going since 2012 which marks there 13th year. The last outfit (black and crystal dress) looked amazing, flowed really nicely and great to photograph too.  

All in all it was shiny, moody, some aspects of gospel inspiration in there as well,

and above all else, very cool. BTW I thought the last dress was just stunning :0

Now for this years Melbourne Fashion Festival. I wanted to try some new ways of capturing the events and runways. One of them was to start doing videos to post alongside my usually fashion photography. It’s been on my mind for a while not to incorporate some videos to my coverage at fashion events. Mainly because I find video to be a important factor in capturing a deeper understanding of a larger runway event, such as the MFF. 

VIKTORIA AND WOODS

My first shot was Viktoria and Woods Runway

My favourite outfit from the collection was definitely the deep red trench coat, spectacular colour! 

MANNING CARTELL

Manning Cartell was the next. Celebrating 20 years of design with there: Love. Flowers. Dance. collection. The flowing silk and satin evening dresses were the highlight of the collection.

The floral dress had a nice balance of colour, although the pattern not lining up was interesting, whether or not the look was intentional or not I don’t know, but interesting to see a bold look. We also had a Netflix star on the runway. Kylah Day from the streaming tv show: Territory. Making a grand appearance (and doing an excellent job of it, too) on the runway as well. 

ROMANCE WAS BORN

Last on the runway was the amazing collection by Romance Was Born.

The colour and beauty of this show was simply breathtaking. As a fashion photographer, having a runway show with big colourful outfits gives so much movement and life to the images.

The large white and heart shaped polkadot dress looked stunning and was my favourite on the night. The event was a fitting way to end the first runway of the Melbourne Fashion Festival and kickstart the week of premium runways.
